Success Story

Access to news and information can be a challenge for those who are blind, but the DAV Charitable Service Trust is committed to ensuring all ill and injured veterans can live fulfilling lives with respect and dignity.

Through the Trust’s support of Audio Information Network of Colorado, veterans who are blind or have limited vision have free access across the country to audio broadcasts of military news and announcements for local events, services and resources.

The organization uses streaming platforms including Apple Podcasts and Spotify to distribute its content. Programming schedules are available through Braille, large print and flash drives for new and current listeners.

Audio Information Network of Colorado also provides no-cost listening equipment and support services.

Navy veteran Dean Lewis’ praise for the organization goes beyond the audio services he uses and relies on. He recently participated in a fundraising hike for the network, which brought back fond memories from when he was able to see.

“When I was young, I hiked the mountains near my house with my family,” Lewis said.  “I have held on to those memories as I lost my vision. The hike with [Audio Information Network of Colorado] was my first hike without my sight. And with my daughter, we hiked that mountain and it felt wonderful.”

The Trust continues to seek opportunities to support organizations that create a more equitable environment for ill and injured veterans.
