Success Story(Tammy E., Texas) In April of 2005, while serving in Iraq, my husband's vehicle was hit with a 500-pound Explosive Device. He miraculously survived but sustained severe burns on most of his body. I was able to take some time off from work to be by his hospital bedside. But during my recent service on the President's Commission on Care for America's Returning Wounded Warriors, I met many loved ones who lost their jobs and their livelihoods in order to care for their wounded relatives.
But, because of the work of the National Partnership, one of the Commission's key recommendations became law in early 2008; the Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) was expanded to allow military families up to six months of job-protected leave to care for their loved ones. Additionally, military family members can use FMLA leave to help them cope with the deployment of a close relative. On behalf of my family and so many others, I thank the National Partnership and its supporters for working to make life better for all of America's women and families.
