EMERGENCY's work in action: Amir's Story
Amir was one year old when he came to EMERGENCY's Paediatric and Surgical Centre in Anabah, Afghanistan, having suffered extensive burns all over his body caused by a spilled pot of boiling milk.
This was not the only problem however.
His burns were very old and infected. He was severely dehydrated and was so weak he struggled to keep his eyes open.
These all point to the underreported poverty crisis that Afghanistan is facing, where millions of people cannot pay for food or healthcare.
Amir's treatment exemplifies EMERGENCY's holistic, complete and exceptionally high-quality care that helps for the long-term.
He was stabilised and needed surgery every 48 hours for three weeks, alongside which he was treated to improve his nutritional status and speed up his tissue regeneration.
