Tanysha's Aunt threw her out of an overcrowded apartment. Having never known her father, and her mother incarcerated, Tanysha, 18, had run out of options. Tanysha joined a street gang and began to commit petty crimes. Within a year, the gang convinced Tanysha to participate in the sex trade. She began to use drugs and alcohol to escape the pain. An outreach worker told her about Covenant House New York and she came to our Crisis Center six months ago, seeking refuge from the dangerous streets of the City. CHNY helped Tanysha find the stability she so desperately needed. She has successfully held down a job since she joined our transitional living Rights of Passage Program. She currently works as a nurse's aide, but plans to go back to school to get her nursing degree. Tanysha often expresses gratitude for the services and staff at CHNY.
