Success Story

My name is Ofelia Alaniz. I am 76 years old, and was diagnosed with breast cancer in February 2005. This is my story.

Cancer has had a profound impact in my life — I now have more faith and strength in God. I am a very grounded and centered person. I have changed physically — I feel more delicate, and at times my bones ache. But now I don't worry about anything. Of course life was easier before the diagnosis and when I was first diagnosed, I admit I had some fear right before the surgery. I didn't know what was going to happen.

During my recuperation, the WCRC gave me the support I needed to get back on my feet. Despite the fact that I don't have much, when I was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2005, the WCRC was there for me with economic support to help me pay the rent, and other necessities.

But the WCRC has given me so much more — it was the support groups for Latinas with cancer that have given me so much strength and support to continue forward. I am very thankful.

Thank God that I have so much support in the WCRC!

To my fellow survivors, I say, don't stray off the path — everything is possible with faith and community — don't get depressed — let's continue forward together!
