Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease is a genetic nerve disease that affects some 2.8 million people worldwide. A progressive disease, CMT destroys the long nerves to the legs/feet and arms/hands, creating muscle weakness and/or sensory loss. As the nerves die, the muscles around them wither. Muscle imbalance causes the bones of the feet to lose their shape, making standing, walking and balancing a challenge. Hand function is also affected. Other symptoms may include tripping, high arches, foot drop, loss of proprioception, fatigue and chronic pain. CMT is currently incurable, but not usually fatal, though it can be severely disabling.
