Success Story
Sara lives in Santa Clara County with her family. She and her siblings, ages 11, 12, and 14, are being raised by Samuel, a single father whose job does not provide health insurance. Sara and her sister, Jessica, had stopped taking their medication for juvenile diabetes because it was very expensive--more than the family could afford. Unfortunately, not taking diabetic medicine can result in organ damage and blurred vision, which can affect classroom performance.
Now that they are Healthy Kids members, Sara and Jessica's prescriptions for their diabetes are covered as well as their quarterly examinations. They have their own doctor and have been to a vision specialist. They are attending classes for children that teach them about nutrition and healthy habits. Samuel is attending a series of diabetic education classes to better understand his children's disease and to learn how to better control it.
