Success Story

Jesuit Refugee Service (JRS)/USA is committed to accompanying, serving, and advocating on behalf of refugees and all forcibly displaced people. JRS is present in 58 different countries around the globe providing education, mental health, and psychosocial support (MHPSS), emergency services, and livelihoods programs. Through these programs, we comprehensively respond to the needs of refugees effected by war and climate change.

Education is at the cornerstone of our mission. Zahra* is a 14-year-old girl living in Bar Elias, Lebanon. She and her family had to flee Syria when war and conflict threatened their lives. After arriving in Lebanon, Zahra’s family connected with the JRS Telyani School and Zahra was able to enroll in their kindergarten program. She remained in their curriculum through sixth grade.

Zahra embraced the opportunity to learn with open arms. She flourished in the safe learning environment where she could practice her Arabic and English skills and grow in mathematics and science.

“I realized that hope does not end at this school; JRS Lebanon instills in me the belief that my dreams are greater than my anxieties and that I must remain positive, work hard, and make it happen,” she said.

JRS works with hundreds of thousands of students like Zahra around the world. By supporting JRS/USA you help create and sustain programs that equip refugees with the necessary physical and mental tools to help them rebuild their lives and heal from the potentially traumatic experience of being forced to flee their homes.
