Success Story

One Austin Partners in Education program, Partners in Reading, provides teachers, volunteers, and students a fun and structured way to help children in under-resourced schools become strong readers. Volunteers meet with their own small group of students in the classroom for 45 minutes to an hour every week. Students work on learning to pronounce words, reading fluently, and ultimately, interpreting what they read.

Last year, Brisa participated weekly in the program in her second grade classroom, and she loves practicing her reading skills with her 'reading buddy' every week. With the help of the program, Brisa is now reading 3 grade levels higher than when she started the program! In fact, 5-10% more students who participate in the program are reading at or above grade level compared to students not in the program. Brisa's volunteer 'reading buddy' Jill agrees that the program is making a big difference. Jill says that when she first started working with the students, comprehension was a challenge, but "now, when I ask them questions, they do get it. They know what the story is about, rather than just reading it." When Brisa grows up, she wants to be a librarian, saying that reading is important because it "gives us lots of facts about different things."

Your support helps Austin Partners in Education enable students across Austin to be successful inside and outside of the classroom.
