At the SF SPCA, we depend exclusively on the generosity and support of fellow animals lovers to provide new homes, needed medical care, and a host of other humane and compassionate services to the animals we all love so much.

Sweet Narwhal arrived at the SF SPCA with a big personality—and an even bigger problem. Weighing in at 27 pounds, nearly three times the weight of an average cat, she struggled with mobility. Despite her physical discomfort, Narwhal’s spirit remained unshaken, and she purred loudly with every pet and cuddle. 

Determined to help Narwhal regain her health, our Shelter Medicine team devised a special weight-loss plan. It included a carefully controlled diet, medications, and weekly workouts on an underwater treadmill. This form of hydrotherapy provided the perfect way for Narwhal to shed pounds safely while minimizing stress on her joints. 

As Narwhal’s fitness routine progressed, so did her confidence. With each underwater session, she became more mobile, more energetic, and more playful. She charmed everyone who worked with her. As she grew stronger and healthier, her affectionate and playful personality shined through even more.

Today, Narwhal is thriving, enjoying her new lease on life with her loving family. She moves freely, plays enthusiastically, and continues to charm everyone she meets.
