Success Story

More than half of the San Francisco Food Bank pantry clients come from working households, similar to Maria's home. Maria has four children: Carlos, 8 and Miranda, 4, were with her the day she visited the pantry. She also has an 11 yr-old daughter and 12 yr-old boy. She is a stay-at-home mom. Her husband works two jobs to support the family: he works on a nightclub cleaning crew and he has a job as a line cook at a restaurant.

Carlos and Miranda help their mother bring home the food she receives at a Food Bank pantry. As the pantry volunteers handed them plums, corn, peppers, pineapples, bread, granola bars, soup base and many other items, Maria would remind them, "What do you say?", and both would chime in, "Thank you! Gracias!". Maria said that the pantry helps by getting the family fresh fruit that the kids love, but are beyond their means, especially pineapple, watermelon and peaches. The San Francisco Food Bank is committed to providing nutritious produce to low-income households and aims to distribute more than 17 million pounds of fresh fruits and vegetables this year.
