California Shakespeare Theater

With Shakespeare's depth of humanity as our touchstone, we build character and community through authentic, inclusive, and joyful theater experiences.

Real Life

In February 1999, following a process of extensive community involvement and feedback, this Theater welcomed Jonathan Moscone aboard as our new Artistic Director. Under his leadership, the Cal Shakes is poised to become one of the leading theaters in the Bay Area. Our programming includes an extensive array of great works including, world premiere adaptations of theatrical and literary texts; unique interpretations of great American theater; and plays by the most exciting voices of contemporary theater.

Last season, Cal Shakes touched over 43,000 members of this community who attended our performances. In 1999, over 1,600 secondary school students attended one of our special, discounted student matinees. For many young people, this afternoon at the theatre was the first time they had ever seen a professional Shakespeare production; for some, it was their first exposure to live theatre of any kind. Cal Shakes also serves as a training ground for approximately 10 early career actors each year through our apprentice program. This season, for the first time, we were able to offer full scholarships to these students.

It is through the generosity of our donors and patrons that we are able to offer quality theater and educational programming to the community.
