Let's join together to improve the health and nutrition of our neighbors! Northern Illinois Food Bank, a member of Feeding America, provides 66 million meals annually to hungry families and children in 13 counties through 900 food assistance sites.
Arlene, 77, has been a resident of Castle Towers in Bensenville for more than 10 years, but you can tell she is still a city girl at heart. Born and raised in Chicago, Arlene has a wildly independent spirit and has traveled abroad many times throughout her life, including to India, Egypt and China.
But in recent years, Arlene's travels have centered on the trips she takes downtown twice a week for doctor visits for her many health issues including non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, severe neuropathy, diabetes and arthritis. With medical bills of $300 per month, grocery store trips being difficult due to her wheelchair, and minimal SSI benefits from taking early retirement, Arlene relies on Northern Illinois Food Bank's senior meal box program to make ends meet and have access to nutritious foods.
The Food Bank's meal box program provides seniors across Northern Illinois with a monthly box of nutritious, shelf-stable foods.
"[The box] is good for me because it's something to look forward to, and I look forward to seeing what I get each month. It's like a Christmas present," Arlene says.
Although she greatly appreciates and enjoys each box, Arlene's hardworking and humble nature made it difficult to ask for help when she needed it most.
"Thank you from the bottom of my heart," she says. "I am so grateful to the people who were kind enough to provide the money to the Food Bank for this food, and to the Food Bank volunteers who took time out of their lives to pack a food box for me … Arlene!"
