Success Story

Through Austin Partners in Education’s Mentoring Program, caring adult volunteers help students improve their social skills, develop positive attitudes, and gain self-confidence. Each mentor-mentee pair meets for 45 minutes at an allotted time, each week, throughout the school year; mentors can choose any middle or high school in the Austin Independent School District. APIE Mentor Sydney B. reported that her weekly lunch meetings with her mentee "survived middle school, a pandemic, wait-listed high school enrollment for her and a season of professional uncertainty for me. My mentee is dynamic, quick-witted, and emotionally intelligent. We have great conversation and always pick right up where we left off!"

In another volunteer based APIE program, Math Classroom Coaching, volunteers work with small groups of 2-4 students in their classrooms on topics such as 8th grade math and Algebra 1. Sessions occur weekly on the campuses of 3-5 AISD Middle Schools. Andrew, a recent Math Classroom Coach, says: “I like seeing someone having that ‘lightbulb moment’ when a concept sinks in and they are able to repeat and master the new ability. Each person can take a slightly different length of time to pick up new theories or ideas, and sometimes we as tutors can offer that little extra one-on-one attention that is the encouragement to realize the concept.”

We encourage community members to get involved with APIE through one of our volunteer programs. Thanks for your support!
