Success Story
Zac Clark was in his second year at the University of San Francisco when he moved into his first apartment in the city. It was 2020, and because of the COVID-19 pandemic, there weren’t many people moving around the streets other than San Francisco’s homeless population.
As Zac got to know the people experiencing homelessness in his neighborhood, he was driven to take action. He founded The HomeMore Project to raise awareness and educate others about homelessness and its challenges.
More recently, Zac developed a backpack called the Makeshift Traveler to help meet practical needs of those experiencing homelessness while connecting with the community. These waterproof backpacks have a hard exterior shell, a solar panel attached to a battery pack and a USB charging port. There’s a minimalist pillow attached to the bag’s exterior, too. Inside are supplies including socks, a sleeping bag, water bottle, flashlight, hygiene kit and lockbox, plus an informational brochure about local organizations and agencies.
The HomeMore Project’s 2025 goal is to distribute 2,000 of these packs in 25 cities across California.
Funds from the Trust support distributing these Makeshift Traveler backpacks to veterans experiencing homelessness.
