Mr. Z, an honorably discharged Marine Corps veteran, came to VRC in 2018 a housing crisis. In tears when he arrived at our office in Bullhead City, AZ, he had recently relocated to the area with his wife, who was six months pregnant, and their daughter in search of a lower cost of living. Unable to find employment, they were living in their car. Mr. Z's only income was his monthly service-connected disability check. A VRC case manager booked a room for them at a hotel that offers a discount to VRC, using donated funds, until permanent housing could be secured. Mr. Z's Nurse Assistant certification had expired, but his VRC case manager searched online and discovered that he could renew his registration at no cost. With his renewed certification, Mr. Z was able to find employment at a local nursing home. Meanwhile, we helped get him and his family situated in a three-bedroom house and also provided referrals for maternity care, school enrollment, food stamps, and a PTSD support group. Separately, through the generous support of a valued community partner, in late 2018 VRC was able to assist two veterans and their families - a female Army veteran with a husband and kids, and a male Marine Corps veteran with a wife and kids - who lost their homes in the Camp Fire in Paradise, CA, each with a $1,200 shopping spree two days before Christmas.
