Success Story

Driving a loved one who is frail or has mobility issues to an appointment can be a daunting
task, especially if you don’t have an accessible vehicle. You want your loved one to be safe andcomfortable. Yet trying to transfer someone from a wheelchair or a walker can hurt the person and possibly even you.

Each year, SOAR! receives many requests for funding to help purchase accessible vans.
These vans help ensure that aging Catholic Sisters, Brothers and Priests can get to needed
medical appointments. Because the vans are safe and easy to enter, religious using wheelchairs or walkers can go on visits or attend other outings which enhance their quality of life.

Accessible vans provide more than just safety. They offer dignity without sacrificing the health of the religious being transported or the person helping the Sister, Brother or Priest.

The Oblate Sisters of Providence in Baltimore received a grant from SOAR! to purchase an accessible van, which makes it easier and safer to transport Sisters to doctor’s
appointments. Many of the Sisters who use walkers or wheelchairs can now represent their community at conferences and other religious gatherings.

Sister Canisius Hansberry, who is 85 years old and continues to serve the Sisters in the infirmary, said, “The van helps the Sisters feel safe and they don’t have to worry they might fall.”

Your support of SOAR! and its vital mission enhances the quality of life for so many Catholic Sisters, Brothers and Priests. It allows aging religious to safely go to appointments to ensure that they haveproper care. It ensures religious with limited mobility have opportunities to be more independent and engaged.
