Success Story

At age 2 1/2 Susan had not yet spoken her first word. She would focus on flicking a light switch on and off for hours. She became hysterical upon seeing yellow or hearing the hum of a fluorescent light. She refused to eat anything except bread and applesauce. She sometimes slept only 2 hours a night When she was 3 years old, Susan was diagnosed with autism.

Susan had trouble making friends due to her lack of social skills. Her teacher had a background in dealing with children with autism and suggested that her parents contact the Autism Society of America for information. Thanks to public support, the Autism Society had a wealth of information and referral services to offer Susan's family.

Susan is now 7 years old and attends a special education class. She is beginning to show signs that she may speak, yet. Speech therapy and occupational therapy have been added to her school day. While the course of this disorder is still a mystery, thanks to appropriate guidance from the Autism Society, individuals like Susan can succeed in life.

We could not do this without the generous support we receive from others and for that we are very grateful!
