Our mission is kids: we provide runaway/homeless youth under age 21 with a safe place to sleep, wholesome food, clothing, and unconditional love.
After enduring a childhood of instability and problems with her mother, Tiesha hopscotched through early adolescence by bouncing from home to whatever friend would take her in, especially her best friend from 8th grade. But when she was 17, she ran out of options, and her friend's mother drove her from Palm Beach County to Covenant House's Ft. Lauderdale crisis shelter.
"When you spend so much time surviving, you get drained," Tiesha said."I felt safe and stable at Covenant House. You gave me a place to rest, everything I needed. It was comforting to be among kids in the same situation.I didn't feel so segregated.I didn't have to worry about refueling, to fill myself up.I utilized all the resources at Covenant House."
Now, 12 years later, Tiesha recalls, "Covenant House helped me move forward.I didn't feel so stuck. There was hope."
In addition to working full-time and raising her 9-year old son, Tiesha is currently a student at the Harriet L. Wilkes Honors College of Florida Atlantic University in Jupiter, where she is pursuing a degree in social work. Her ambition is to open "Hot Ticket," which she envisions as a highly supportive program for motivated homeless youth who want to advance educationally and socially."My development of this goal all stems from my stay at Covenant House," she said."I can not say enough about the influence Covenant House had on my life.I'm grateful."
