About

Family Connections develops strong and healthy families and thriving communities in the Portola and Excelsior neighborhoods of San Francisco.

Real Life

Juliana came to the United States from Colombia for the opportunity to work and get an education. She met the Rojas family via an au pair website and became a live-in nanny to their infant daughter. Her lack of language, discomfort in a new country, and child-rearing responsibilities made her isolated and lonely. The Rojas's encouraged her to bring the baby to Portola Family Connections' (FC) daily Child-Parent Drop-In (CPDI) program, where she and the baby could both socialize in a friendly, respectful, and caring atmosphere. FC staff and the other participants welcomed her. She joined the Familias Latinas support group, which meets weekly during CPDI. In this support group, she participated in conversations on child-rearing, nutrition, safety, finances, and the neighborhood and built relationships with other participants, particularly two mothers who attend CPDI and Familias Latinas. The trio attends Family Connections activities together and meet regularly outside of FC for play dates and adventures, such as trips to the Bay Area Discovery Museum and San Francisco Zoo. The three women support each other and hold each other accountable to socialize both inside and outside of FC. Juliana also learned more about parenting/caregiving by taking the 1-2-3 Magic series that Family Connections offers. After a year in Family Connections programming, Juliana is thriving. She takes English as a Second Language (ESL) classes with FC partner City College of San Francisco, and is planning to continue her education. She's also made two very good friends.
