About

Working with you for over 107 years to fight lung disease and improve air quality through education, advocacy, community programs and research!

Real Life

Denise Ferrar supports Breathe California because she understands what it's like to live with lung disease.

While she looks like a regular 15-year-old teen, Denise has to fight everyday to stay healthy. At 3 years old, after frequent hospital visits for breathing difficulties, her doctors determined that rather than asthma or bad allergies, little Denise had Cystic Fibrosis.

Despite 15 surgeries and countless hospitalizations, Denise has remained energetic, lively and unwilling to let CF slow her down. Now a high school sophomore, she is a passionate CF spokesperson. This year Denise led fellow South San Francisco High School students at the Breath of Life Walk in Golden Gate Park, raising funds to fight lung disease. "I think it's important that people know about CF," Denise says. "I feel we need to raise awareness so that others know how hard things really are."

Like Denise, over 4 million Californians suffer from lung disease and struggle to breathe every day.

At Breathe California, we believe that breathing should not be a struggle or a risk. Our local non-profit offers a wide array of local services that address the most important lung health issues facing our communities today. These include programs to: teach kids how to manage their asthma, prevent teens from using tobacco, assist smokers who want to quit, and help lung disease patients cope with their illness. We also advocate for key clean air and public health policies, and support innovative lung health research.
