Help us change the lives of military heroes and their families: Emergency financial assistance, financial education and credit-building for brighter futures.
The Pentagon Federal Credit Union Foundation's Dream Makers program makes it possible for every American defender with a low-to-moderate income to securely own a first home. The program offers grants of up to $5,000 for down payments to first-time homebuyers of modest means. To protect against changes in the market and personal circumstances, the program requires applicants to combine some of their personal savings with our grants to offer at least a 3% down payment.
SGT Joseph K. suffered a traumatic brain injury last November during his second tour in Iraq. But that didn't stop him and his wife from fulfilling their dream of settling down in Missouri.
The Foundation received a call from SGT K and his wife in August. He is assigned to the Warrior Transition Unit (WTU) in Landstuhl Germany but is making plans to transfer to the WTU at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri. He will eventually be medically discharged and he and his wife decided to settle down in Missouri. Relatives already living there found a small farmhouse for sale that the K's fell in love with from afar. Using a power of attorney, and the ease of applying for a Dream Makers grant online and over the phone, SGT K closed on the their first home at the end of August.
Since April 2007, the Dream Makers program disbursed 64 grants totaling $289,375 in support of $11.3 million in mortgages. We have met the goal of disbursing 40 grants in 2008. The goal for 2009 is 75 grants.
