Real Life

RAINN founded the National Sexual Assault Hotline at 1.800.656.HOPE to ensure that victims of sexual assault had access to confidential and comprehensive support services, 24 hours a day - 7 days a week. This free and immediate help is critical in helping survivors work through the aftermath of being sexually assaulted and find healing and happiness.

The following is a story sent to RAINN by a young woman who reached out to the National Sexual Assault Hotline to help her deal with her rape:

I was raped one night by a friend. I tried to push him away, but he held me down. I kept saying, "No, I don't want this," but he did it anyway. I didn't know what to do when it was over. We had the same friends; I couldn't tell any of them what happened. What if they didn't believe me? Even if they would believe me, could I ever say those words? It's too embarrassing to talk about.

I went numb. I stopped talking with my friends, my family - stopped almost everything. I stayed home and watched a lot of tv. I saw some ads about the National Sexual Assault Hotline and RAINN. They said counselors were available to talk with people who were raped. I cried hysterically the first time I called. I couldn't even really talk about the rape, but the counselor listened to me anyway. She stayed on the phone with me for 2 hours and let me get it all out at my own pace.

The counselors have made all the difference in my life. It's not easy yet, but it's getting better. I know that with their help and support, I'll be okay.
