Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine

About

Ending cruelty to animals in medical education, research and product testing by promoting compassionate, human-relevant alternatives. Advocating preventive medicine by promoting healthy nutrition policies and practices that save human and animal lives.

Real Life

Every year, tens of millions of primates, dogs, cats, rabbits, and other animals are killed in laboratory experiments, medical training courses, and regulatory tests. Many animals suffer excruciating pain, and nearly all are killed. The Physicians Committee's team of medical and scientific experts is showing that there are better, human-relevant methods we can use to train doctors, develop cures, and test for safety instead of relying on crude and ineffective animal experiments. With your support, we recently achieved several important victories. After nearly three decades of work—including pressure from our experts and supporters, demonstrations, legal complaints, and extensive media coverage—we received word that the last two medical schools still using animals for medical student training have stopped! Now, at every medical school in the United States and Canada, students will get their M.D. or D.O. degrees with a focus on healing and without ever even being allowed to harm animals. At the same time, our medical experts are dramatically changing the way doctors treat chronic diseases such as diabetes, heart disease, obesity, and cancer. We put prevention over pills in order to empower patients to take control of their own health. Through cutting-edge clinical research and education, we help people harness the lifesaving power of a plant-based diet.
