We offer the tools, supports, and relationships that children need to navigate transitions, connect to community, flourish in school, and prepare for college and career.
Only 12, Priscilla Canela has already contributed 596 hours of community service in her 2 1/2 years as an FYI participant.
Priscilla has engaged herself in a broad range of service projects (her favorites are the food pantry and park cleanups), helped to lead the Baby Care Givers 2 service group last year (her group distributed baby clothes and supplies to local teenaged moms) and has recruited 3 friends into FYI this program year.
She says that her favorite FYI reward was going to Indiana on Trip USA in 2008. "The family there made me feel at home and they taught me a lot of things." The retreats up at Camp Scatico also rank highly, because "we get to swim in the lake and play Manhunt until really late at night."
Looking ahead, Priscilla plans to be as involved as possible with FYI, but sees herself "going away to college, for sure." Priscilla is following in the footsteps of her older brother Alexis, an FYI Youth Leader who is also college-bound.
