Real Life

From an update on recipients of the Andrew Popp Memorial Scholarship Fund (August 2017) BENJAMIN'S STORY Living in Katwe Slum, in Kampala, Uganda, and in need of food, Benjamin found his way to the SOM outreach center. While there he learned to play chess as one of Robert Katende's original group of players, affectionately called "The Pioneers." The aunt with whom Benjamin and his siblings were living could not afford school fees and he soon qualified for an Andrew Popp Memorial Scholarship. Benjamin has grown to excel at chess, having won several tournaments and achieving the rank of Candidate Master. He has also completed his secondary education and will be attending Northwest University in the United States in the fall of 2017. Though most APMSF students will not be going to college in the U.S., Benjamin's story is an example of the transformation that takes place through education.
